Frequently Asked Questions

Science behind our sanitiser

Q. What is our 100% Organic Hand Sanitising Spritz made of?

In our case our product contains: 84% organic wheat alcohol blended with moisturising organic aloe vera leaf juice and organic antibacterial essential oils (lavender, lemongrass, lemon peel, eucalyptus, tea tree) and finally bio-active silver Ag(n)1+ as hydrosol.

Q. How effective are hand sanitisers in infection control?

WHO recommends the use of hand sanitiser with at least 70% alcohol content: the diluted alcohol coagulates the protein, but at a slower rate, so that it penetrates all the way through the cell before coagulation can block it. Then the entire cell before coagulation can block it meaning the entire organism (virus) dies. We employ the safest metric based on our formula with an availability of 84.0% volume ethanol so that we can be assured of an 83% bioavailability of ethanol. In other words, sufficient pow wow to kill a pathogen.

Q. How do I know I am getting a quality product?

All products labelled as ‘sanitiser’ must be subject to Biocide regulations. The pesticides control section (PCS) of the Department of Agriculture, Food & Marine only issue PCS authorisation to those whose ingredients comply with the strictest standards. Our PCS authorisation number 100444 is detailed on our label. We are also listed on the approved biocides register.

Q. Why have hand sanitiser’s been in the news?

Alcohol based sanitisers have become our shield against COVID-19. They are strong. Ethanol and Methanol have a similar chemical structure but the difference here is methanol is toxic. In other word’s if ethanol were to get in your eye it would be unpleasant and will require you to rinse with a water solution but if you were to get methanol in your eye it is toxic and therefore could cause severe irritation and potential blindness.

Q. What are the risks of methanol?

Methanol is a toxic substance. It causes severe allergic reactions.

Q. Sanitiser is back in the news now. What is the issue this time?

We all want to feel safe. There is regulatory control over licencing and authorisation of all biocide products this is reassuring for consumers as the process certifies ingredients used and highlights any that may be harmful.

Q. Is there a need for greater vigilance and monitoring of hand sanitisers?

All manufacturers must comply with strict and robust regulatory criteria and must be to the satisfaction of the standards of conduct of the Department of Agriculture Food & Marine in order to become a licensed Biocide. The process is not for the faint hearted. Every proposing company must provide a safe and utterly transparent supply chain within the EU. This is a lot of documentation from origin of the product to its final intended use and in what specific combination with other specified certified ingredients.

Q. Where should hand sanitiser be stored?

All licensed Biocidal products should be stored out of reach and sight of children and in a safe place.

Q. Is hand sanitiser flammable?

Owing to the quantity of ethanol contained within; usually minimum 70% volume it is advised on all labelling that the product is highly flammable and comes with a hazardous symbol denoted by a red square highlighting that the contents contain a hazardous chemical; ethanol.

Q. Is hand sanitiser dangerous for children?

There is a legal requirement that all registered biocides come to market with a clearly labelled warning including a hazardous pictogram. Information is provided on how to contact the Poisons Centre with a telephone number typically detailed on all approved biocide labels. For children under six years of age hand sanitiser should be used with adult supervision and children should be monitored.

Q. Is there any expiry date for sanitiser?

Each product is dependent on its own ingredients; typical shelf life is 18-24 months.

Q. Many surface cleaners and disinfectants say they can be used against COVID. Can I use these on my hands or body to prevent or treat the virus?

Always follow instructions on household cleaners. Do not use disinfectant sprays or wipes on your skin because they may cause skin and eye irritation.
